The history matters. So does tonight.
DC’s punk history is a reason to listen, not a substitute for a current show guide. Black Cat offers a touring-concert starting point. Rhizome is a different kind of space for experimental music, workshops and work made with its participants. Put their current calendars beside each other and there is more to discover than a list of historic addresses.
Doors is not a set time
Black Cat’s Militarie Gun and Ceremony listings publish doors times. We retain those instead of filling in an invented first-set time or finish. Its paid-concert policy generally permits all ages, while explicitly restricted events remain exceptions. Read the source page before relying on either timing or admission.
Rhizome’s new building is a future plan
The reviewed about page still gives Maple Street as the active address. Its April 2026 update describes planned renovations at Alaska Avenue and a hoped-for opening later in the year. That is not evidence a specific show has moved. This profile will need a fresh source check when the transition happens; a build date will not silently rewrite the address.
An entry ramp does not solve every barrier
Rhizome publishes a ramp to the back door and says performances usually happen downstairs, but its only bathroom is upstairs. That distinction belongs in a venue guide. Check the actual event’s access requirements and policies with the organizer. We have not audited either venue in person.
Make the return part of the decision
The operators reference different Metro stations: U Street/Cardozo for Black Cat and Takoma for Rhizome. Use WMATA for the actual service date and route home. If you are pitching a show or workshop, read Rhizome’s community purpose before sending a standard club pitch. A participatory proposal should say what people will do, what materials they need and who will facilitate it.

Pick Black Cat for a particular touring bill and Rhizome for the experimental or participatory program that catches your ear. Check the venue address and the trip home each time.
