There is a useful route into this scene through arts organizations rather than genre-only venue lists. AS220 brings shows into a network of studios, galleries and education. Machines with Magnets connects recording, exhibitions and performances in Pawtucket. The calendars make room for punk, noise, improvisation and projects that will not fit in one filter.
Two AS220 doors, not one
Main Stage and Black Box sit at different Empire Street addresses. Save the room name when you save the date. The current Destroy All Cities! listing uses Black Box; Malevich uses Main Stage. This is the sort of small distinction a cropped flyer can lose and a useful show guide should retain. Ask for access information about the booked room rather than the organization in general.
Pawtucket deserves its own travel plan
Machines with Magnets is at 400 Main Street in Pawtucket. Do not treat it as another door on an Empire Street evening. A trip that looks close on a regional map can still involve a transfer or a different ride home. Use RIPTA for the actual travel date, and settle who is driving before making a late-night assumption.
An invitation to make a bill
AS220’s performance program is unjuried, but that does not mean a date is automatically available. Its published booking process asks for a local participant on the bill and warns that weekends can fill months ahead. Make the local connection first, agree on a format, and send a proposal with alternatives. A private space rental follows a different process.
Leave room for something unfamiliar
The Machines with Magnets calendar is worth reading past the first familiar name. Pair a heavy-music choice with an experimental performance on another date instead of requiring the whole scene to sound alike. We use “Experimental” and “Heavy” as browsing aids, not as claims that every artist on a bill belongs to the same microgenre.
Where we would start
AS220 is the clearest entry point for an all-ages public show or a first booking proposal. Add Pawtucket when its specific bill earns the extra journey.
