Start with the neighborhood, then the bill. O’Brien’s calendar is useful for discovering local support bands and smaller touring acts in Allston. Crystal Ballroom gives you another kind of room in Davis Square: a separate second-floor venue with published elevator information. Putting both under “Boston” helps discovery, but it should not erase the journey between them.
Start with the bill, not a greatest-hits list
Open O’Brien’s show list and follow one unfamiliar opener’s own music page before deciding. A local bill tells you more about what is being made now than a venue’s famous-alumni list. For a bigger touring night, check Crystal Ballroom’s actual event format: standing and seated events are different purchases. The two-room selection here is an entry point, not an inventory of every Boston DIY space.
The age line is part of the plan
O’Brien’s publishes both 18+ and 21+ nights. Crystal Ballroom also varies by event and has additional ID and guardian conditions. For an under-18 group, find explicit all-ages admission before organizing the trip. Our Suitor listing preserves a disagreement between the venue and promoter; it is excluded from definitive age filters until that disagreement is resolved. A friend’s older ticket screenshot will not settle it.
Make one neighborhood your base
Keep food, doors and the ride home in the same plan. The Crystal Ballroom FAQ points to Davis on the Red Line. Use the MBTA planner for Allston and for your return, rather than assuming a late concert aligns with the last useful service. If you are coming from another city, a missed connection is a lodging decision, not just a longer walk.
Follow the people booking the room
Illegally Blind publishes a separate calendar across several spaces. That helps you follow a booking sensibility beyond a single address. Compare it with the venue listing when dates, prices or ages differ. For your own band, send one specific proposal with music, availability and a workable local bill; do not turn an unanswered pitch into five identical follow-ups.
Where we would start
For a first visit, pick one confirmed bill and build the night around its neighborhood. Spend the spare time on the openers instead of trying to collect multiple venues.
